Future-Oriented Innovations

By: Tim Mcintosh

In response to seismic shifts in your industry or working to plan for the long term changing the direction of your organization can have significant benefits. Research has revealed that companies with a more future-oriented culture are more productive and more creative. To be more forward-looking, you can encourage employees and management to develop and implement new strategies and processes that will help the organization better prepare for the future and adapt to the latest trends.

To create future-oriented innovations it is essential to use a dialogic approach required to analyze potential barriers and business opportunities. This can be accomplished by using a framework of futures literacy which includes futures knowledge as well as futures awareness and futures capability. Futures literacy refers to the capacity of a person or an organization to discover, construct and articulate futures and is based on the idea that the creation and expression of futures is a multidisciplinary process that involves different domains, spheres, and stakeholder. Futures awareness is an individual’s ability to perceive the possibilities of the future. It is based on the way they perceive of the world.

Future-oriented technology can be created by developing products and services that enhance people’s lives. These improvements are a result of a collaborative effort between various high tech process stakeholders and require a complex analysis of current issues and alternatives. This kind of innovation requires a complete epistemic transparency and the capacity to listen to suggestions for a long-term future.
